Cobblers cold to Gilligan stay

Ryan Gilligan is set to return to pre-season training as a Northampton player, much to the dismay of boss Gary Johnson.

Johnson, who insists the midfielder has no future at the club, made the player available for transfer on the final day of last season. Johnson was hoping that Watford youth product Gilligan would have found another club over the summer, but that has not happened and he will report back with the rest of the squad on Friday. However, it is clear Johnson's stance on Gilligan, who has a year to run on his Cobblers contract, has not changed. "While Ryan is contracted to the club, he is part of the squad," the Londoner told The Local. "But I won't be using him, so hopefully he is a good enough player for people to take him on board. "He will be at pre-season training. He is under contract and he is going to have to do that, and he might need to get a week or two's fitness work under his belt."
