Cobblers monitor Gilligan

Northampton manager Ian Sampson says he will have to monitor the fitness of midfielder Ryan Gilligan on a game-by-game basis.

It was announced last month that the Cobblers' longest-serving player would be missing for three months as he needed an operation on a bone spur in his ankle. But Gilligan has decided to delay the operation and played the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 win over Southend on Saturday. Sampson said: "It will be important to see how he recovers over the next couple of days. "We'll probably have to manage the situation and maybe let him off training for a couple of days. "If we do that then hopefully he can get through a good recovery and we'll have him available for the game at Shrewsbury next weekend. It's all about how he reacts. Two weeks ago it was unbearable for him but it has settled down."
