Ian Sampson is expecting to find out next week whether striker Adebayo Akinfenwa will sign a new contract at Northampton Town.
Akinfenwa netted 17 goals as the Cobblers missed out on a place in this season's play-offs by just five points and has been offered a fresh deal at Sixfields.
The 28-year-old is weighing up whether to stay in League Two and Cobblers boss Sampson has revealed that Akinfenwa's response will prove pivotal as to whether or not he brings more fresh faces in this summer.
"Bayo has promised me an answer next week," Sampson told the club's official website. "Bayo has had the offer on the table for two months so I'm not twisting his arm and only giving him a few days to decide.
"I've got a good relationship with him and hopefully I will get his decision next week. Depending on whether or not Bayo signs that will probably determine the squad size for next season.
"If he stays we will have a small squad, but if he goes then I might have a bit more scope to bring in a few more players."
Sampson also revealed that contract talks have gone well with Kevin Thornton, while players over the age of 24 have "until midweek to make a decision".
Players under 24 have slightly longer to decide as the club hold their registration and would be entitled to a fee should they leave.
