Northampton defender Fred Murray requires an operation on his achilles.
Northampton defender Fred Murray requires an operation on his Achilles and will be out of action for between three and six months.
The injury is a blow to Cobblers manager Colin Calderwood but Murray's setback has been tempered by the return from injury of Chris Doig and the recruitment of Gavin Johnson from Boston.
"Fred Murray has got to have an operation and that was a big factor in us bringing Gavin Johnson in," Calderwood told the club's official website.
"He will be out for up to six months, depending on how the operation goes and what they find when they operate on his Achilles.
"To have him out for that length of time is not a good situation for either him or ourselves."
Despite the return to fitness of Doig, the former Nottingham Forest defender is unlikely to be involved in Friday's League Two encounter at Wycombe's Causeway Stadium.
