STOCKPORT COUNTY took a major step to avoiding relegation from Division Two with an emphatic 3-0 victory at bottom club Northampton Town, who are on the brink of the drop to the Third Division.

Three goals in the first 24 minutes of the match was enough to ensure player-manager Carlton Palmer's side jump four places to 14th in the table.

Two goals from Aaron Wilbraham [pictured] and one goal from James Goodwin sealed the victory at the Sixfields Stadium, with the home side now teetering on the verge of certain relegation.

The Cobblers are eight points adrift of safety and should Barnsley beat Mansfield Town and Chesterfield defeat Oldham Athletic on Saturday, Northampton Town will be relegated with three matches remaining this season.
