Adams targets young guns

Port Vale manager Micky Adams wants to add some youth to his promotion-chasing squad.

Adams has already signed left-back Daniel Jones, centre-half Darren Purse, midfielder Chris Birchall and striker Lee Hughes this month. He told the Sentinel: "We're looking at a couple of options, perhaps in terms of younger players coming into the squad. They might not necessarily be for this season, but for the years ahead." Central defender Clayton McDonald left Vale Park on Monday to join npower League Two rivals Bristol Rovers on loan and Adams has hinted at more departures before the January transfer window closes. "As well as players coming in, maybe one or two will depart - possibly on loans," he said. Adams is happy with the business he has conducted so far this month. He added: "I'm delighted. Perhaps we've got players other teams would have wanted. "I'm just trying to get a squad together that can get us out of this division. "I think it's a competitive squad now and the numbers are there. I wouldn't be afraid to throw any of those players into the first team and I'm sure they would do a decent job."
