Adams bemused by stalemate

Port Vale boss Micky Adams could not work out how his side's clash with Southend on Saturday ended goalless.

A string of fine saves from Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal in the first half kept the Southend attack at bay while Shrimpers striker Gavin Tomlin was twice denied by the woodwork. Southend shotstopper Paul Smith also saved well from Ben Williamson and then Ashley Vincent late on, leaving Adams wondering how the game ended in a stalemate. "I don't know how we have got a clean sheet and Paul Sturrock will say the same for Southend," he said. "Both keepers were outstanding and made some great saves. A clean sheet is very rare for us and I think on another day we wouldn't have got away with it but we have and we will take positives from this point. "It certainly wasn't a 0-0 bore draw because there were chances at both ends and both teams tried to win the game. But I think it was a well earned point for ourselves as we know how difficult it is to play at Roots Hall."
