Port Vale claimed their first win of 2007 with a 1-0 victory over Northampton at Vale Park.

Martin Foyle's team had gone eight games without a win but were deserved victors following Danny Whitaker's second half strike.

After 75 seconds of the restart, Malvin Kamara's cross from the right caused panic in the home defence and Whittaker drove the ball into the back of the net.

Vale struck the bar twice in the second period and could have added further to their lead.

The win sees Vale up to 12th place in the table, while Northampton remain 19th.
