Edinburgh looking up after win

Justin Edinburgh is targeting a play-off place after his first game in charge of Gillingham resulted in a 2-1 win at Peterborough.

John Marquis scored his fourth goal in five matches with a drilled finish after 79 minutes to make it four wins and a draw for the Gills in their last five league matches. Bradley Dack's earlier goal for the visitors had been cancelled out in the second half by Jack Payne. Former Newport boss Edinburgh now has his sights set on the top-six after his side moved four points away from the play-off positions. "That was very pleasing. We rode our luck in the first 20-25 minutes then we got ourselves in the game," said Edinburgh. "All in all I'm delighted with the players. The winning goal was superb, a sublime finish. "We are just trying to continue things here as the group is full of enthusiasm and endeavour. "Right now the form we are in we have to be looking up, we have got to be optimistic, but make sure complacency does not settle in. "We have got to chase the teams above us. I'm immensely proud of the players and very excited." Peterborough dominated early on and somehow failed to take the lead when Luke James drilled in a cross from the right and centre-half Shaun Brisley hit the underside of the crossbar from two yards out. Gillingham opened the scoring when Dack steered in Bradley Garmston's cross from 14 yards out after half an hour. The equaliser came after 55 minutes as James pulled the ball back to Payne who turned on to his left foot and slid the ball into the net from the edge of the area. Millwall loanee Marquis grabbed the winner from just inside the box when he met Jake Hessenthaler's cut-back from the right to score at the near post. The result ended Peterborough's three-match unbeaten run and left Posh manager Darren Ferguson frustrated that his side had failed to take advantage of their strong start to the game. "The first 30 minutes is as good as anything we have played. We should have been four goals up," said Ferguson. "They scored with their first shot. That's the difference between the two sides, we were not lethal enough. "They were really clear cut chances for us and the game should have been over after 15 minutes. "We got the goal back and I'm thinking there's only one winner. "This result is a big blow. We should be talking about another win. But as a team we have not scored nearly enough goals. "Jon Taylor will be back for Saturday but we have to keep persevering and hope one of the strikers gets on a run."
