Gregory praise for Edwards

John Gregory was not surprised to see Gwion Edwards find the net as the Welshman earned Crawley a 1-1 draw at Gillingham.

Edwards, who won his first cap earlier this month, has found his scoring boots of late, netting four times in six games. It was his first-half strike that denied Gillingham a first win in seven league games, though Leon Legge did grab an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. "We criticised him before the game because he hadn't scored for one game, which is not allowed," joked Gregory. "He took it well. "It's a hard, well-earned point. The first 45 minutes was probably our best away performance of the season. "But to concede when we did was criminal, as good a goal as it was. That was a killer blow, right on the whistle. "We had to battle in the second half. They put on Keith Keane, which stopped us from playing a little bit. "We had played some good football in the first half, but we didn't get the second goal which we should have had given the possession we had. "We were very resolute in our defending. I have to congratulate the team on the way they continued to battle when Gillingham were knocking balls forward. "The back four played really well, Jamie Ashdown didn't have too much to do." Edwards, who joined Crawley from Swansea this summer, slotted past Gills goalkeeper Stuart Nelson from close range to open the scoring after 29 minutes. But Legge's first goal since January - a powerful header from Jake Hessenthaler's corner - ensured the sides went into the break level. Gillingham substitute Bradley Dack hit the crossbar on the hour-mark before Dean Leacock denied Legge with an excellent block. But Gills manager Peter Taylor was content with a point. "We didn't start very well, but we got better," he said. "Maybe not enough to win the game but with a bit of luck we might have nicked it. "Any team in the division is a hard match. It's not an automatic win if you're playing a team like Crawley. "It wasn't as good a performance as on Tuesday (against Preston). "We didn't try and get a grip of the game early on, I thought we were too easy to play against to begin with. "We had to change our shape at half-time, because Crawley had the better of the midfield. "We added an extra body into that area and Bradley did very well when he came on. "He's capable of making an impact - his last game was away at Rochdale when he started and wasn't so good. "At this level, you don't know what footballers are going to produce." Breaking news, transfer gossip, line ups and goal alerts from your football club - delivered direct to your mobile.
