Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd was full of praise for Adebayo Akinfenwa after the striker scored twice in the 3-1 home win over Aldershot.

Four wins from their last six games have finally lifted the Cobblers out of the relegation zone, while Aldershot slipped to their second successive defeat following a six-match winning run.

Akinfenwa bagged two more goals, the second from the penalty spot, after Kelvin Langmead opened the scoring with his second goal in as many games. Although top scorer Danny Hylton grabbed a stoppage-time consolation, Boothroyd could not hide his delight.

"It was a comprehensive performance, we were very organised and I think we got what we deserved," he said.

"Adebayo was left out when I first arrived, sometimes players sulk but others want to know why they're not in the side. He's worked harder, has got himself fitter and has got his rewards. Four wins from the last six games shows we're on the right track and that one defeat against Port Vale could have been avoided if we had started the game better.

"Although I didn't think we started that well again we managed to grind out a good lead before half-time and controlled the game. I thought we looked like a proper team but you are only one notch from complacency if you get too confident. Our next three away games will be a real test and we will have to be very solid."
