Akinfenwa: Northampton return

Gillingham striker Adebayo Akinfenwa is hoping to make a scoring return against former club Northampton at the weekend to help the Gills overcome their away-day hoodoo.

The Gills haven't won away from Priestfield since the final day of the 2008/09 season, a winless run which has now reached 30 games.

However, the Kent club's joint-top scorer told skysports.com that there will be no love lost for him on Saturday when he lines up against his former team-mates.

"Northampton was a club where I have played some of my best football in my career and I scored a lot of goals there, so it will be nice to go back and see a lot of familiar faces," Akinfenwa said.

"Obviously, I would like them to do well this season and in the future, but that doesn't apply when we face them.

"We will take any away win that comes along, to be honest, but if it happens to be at Northampton then so be it."

Woeful

Despite their woeful record on the road over the last few seasons, the Gills have proved that they can score goals away with 5-4 and 7-4 defeats on their travels this term.

The former Swansea striker believes that an away win isn't far away after a resilient performance at Port Vale last time out.

"I think that I'd be lying if I said that the away record at the club doesn't play on the players' mind every time we play away," Akinfenwa admitted.

"When I joined the club they told me about the fact that they hadn't won away at all last season, but because I wasn't here during that time it didn't really bother me this year.

"However, it does hang over our heads a little bit, but the gaffer and his staff try to make that not an issue for us to worry about.

"There isn't much difference in terms of preparation when it comes to home or away games and hopefully we are starting to turn the corner away from home.

"The lads dug out a very good point at the then league leaders Port Vale."
