Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has played down reports linking youngster Jack Payne with a move away from the club.
The 18-year-old has put in a string of impressive performances for the Gills this term, prompting reports linking him with a move to Championship outfit Reading.
"We don't know whether it's the agent putting the story out there or Reading as a club we don't want that," he told the club's official website.
"Sometimes an agent will place an article like that to try and turn the players head but we want him to focus on playing for us.
"I suspect it's the agent and that just goes to show what a problem agents can be, but then you do need them at times, if you are after a player, they can help you on that front.
"I think it is disruptive to the player because Jack is very level-headed and he's playing very well at the moment."
