Notts County have confirmed that they have failed in their efforts to bring former striker Tommy Johnson back to Meadow Lane.

Magpies boss Gary Mills had opened talks with Johnson and his club Gillingham but after two weeks of discussions, the deal has fallen through.

The former Aston Villa and Celtic hit-man will remain at The Priestfield Stadium until the end of the season.

Mills will continue his search for a new striker, as the Division Two club look to get away from the foot of the table.

Meanwhile, Gillingham have offered one-year contract extensions to the young duo of striker Jones Awuah and defender Dean Beckwith.

Awuah joined non-league side Dover Athletic on a month's loan last week.

In other news, Gills centre back Ian Cox will be out for up to a month following surgery to remove bone fragments from his ankle on Wednesday.
