Crewe manager Steve Davis has revealed club captain Matt Tootle is close to a full recovery.

Tootle has not played for the League One club since October because of ankle problems, though his rehabilitation has been on course over the last few weeks. With Crewe seven points above the relegation zone and having ended their four-match winless run on Saturday against Scunthorpe, Davis had further good news for Alex fans on Tuesday. The Crewe boss told a press conference: "Toots has a real chance of playing again this season. He's almost ready to rejoin training, then a few Under-21 games. "I still might bring one or two in before the loan deadline depending on injuries and results in these next few games." The news on Tootle comes as a boost, especially after Monday's report that defender George Ray may have fractured one or more of his ribs in a collision during the recent defeat at Rochdale, with an X-ray set to determine the full extent of the injury.
