Davis: We're on the right track

Steve Davis felt Crewe's 1-0 win over Yeovil at Gresty Road was more significant than Saturday's 3-2 victory at strugglers Colchester.

Nicky Ajose scored the only goal of the game with a tap-in from Marcus Haber's cross from the right wing seven minutes before the interval.

Davis said: "I said that Saturday was a big win but I felt this was an even bigger game because you have to follow a good result with another good result, particularly with the position we're in."

The Railwaymen lost to MK Dons in a humiliating 5-0 thrashing at home over a week ago, but have come back with two consecutive wins to climb seven points clear of the relegation zone.

"We've been winning to get out and then winning to stay out, which isn't easy given we weren't winning at the start of the season," Davis added.

"The players have worked tremendously hard to get us where we are and they worked particularly hard in this as it was a real battle because the game ended up like that, it wasn't a great spectacle.

"I thought we played the football that was played and deserved the three points."

Yeovil caretaker manager Terry Skiverton gave credit to his opponents for the winning goal.

Skiverton said: "I think we sort of rushed it, I think Nathan (Smith) got the ball wide to play inside to get our strikers on the ball, but it was a little bit wasteful."

"They've (Crewe) stretched us a little at the back, which to be fair you've got to give them a little credit, it was a great ball in."

Skiverton faced his first defeat as caretaker after taking over from Gary Johnson last week.

Crewe face Fleetwood on Saturday at Gresty Road, while Yeovil travel to Doncaster, who won 5-0 at Crawley on Tuesday night.
