Steve Davis believes Jordan Brown could provide the permanent answer to Crewe's problems at left-back.
But Davis is determined not to rush the former West Ham youngster.
Brown, 20, made his debut from the bench in last week's 1-1 draw against Rotherham and followed it up with another impressive cameo in the dramatic 4-3 win over fellow League Two play-off hopefuls Gillingham last time out.
However, ahead of Saturday's clash with leaders Swindon, Davis insists he will continue to carefully manage Brown's workload.
"That's why we brought him in, I'm hoping he's going to be the long-term solution," he said. "He's only 20. We haven't seen a great deal of him in terms of a run of games.
"I'm trying to pick the right games to play him in. I think throwing him into a Swindon game would be quite hard - it's a big ask for a 20-year-old who doesn't know the players well enough.
"I think it's picking that right game to start him in really. But when he's come on, I've been very pleased with him. He's done well."
