Crewe boss Dario Gradi will hand the captain's armband to Ashley Westwood for the Railwaymen's trip to Dagenham on Saturday.
Westwood, who shared the captaincy with David Artell and Liam Bell last season, has only worn the armband once this campaign, but Gradi has no hesitations in allowing the 21-year-old to skipper the side again with the duo struggling for fitness.
Gradi told the club's official website: "I let the players sort out who is going to be captain on the day and it is up to the three of them to decide.
"I have said before that I don't understand why everyone gets so hot under the collar about it because the more captains you have the better. Just because someone has the armband it doesn't mean you cannot talk, organise and encourage others.
"It would do Westy [Westwood] good to have him captain the side when Bell and Artell aren't there on the pitch with him.
"He will take more responsibility and it will be a good experience for him."
