Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi believes a loan move for former favourite Luke Varney is unlikely to come to fruition.
The Alex have been linked with the striker - who is out of favour at Derby - but Gradi believes he will end up at a higher level.
He said: "I've seen it in the papers and of course I would love a player of Luke Varney's ability to come here.
"But I would think someone like that is beyond us.
"I'm sure there will be bigger clubs than us interested in taking him on loan if he is available.
"If there was any chance of him coming here then of course we would take it, but I wouldn't be optimistic on that one."
