Crewe Alexandra are close to agreeing a deal with Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Steve Phillips.

The shot-stopper is currently on loan at Crewe and boss Dario Gradi is very happy with him.

Indeed, Phillips was offered a two-year deal by Crewe for next summer, when his contract with Rovers expires.

Before that Crewe are hoping that Rovers agree to let him remain with them on loan until the end of the season.

"We are edging closer to agreeing something with Steve and his club," said Gradi.

"I have spoken to Lennie (Lawrence, Rovers director of football) and he is happy with the loan extension but that doesn't necessarily mean that his board of directors will be happy with it.

"We will have to wait and see on that one but I think we are heading towards a solution. Steve wants to come here and we want to sign him so that is a good basis to move forward.

"We will look to sign him on loan until the end of the season with a guarantee to sign him permanently in the summer once his contract at Bristol Rovers has expired.

"He will need a shoulder operation in the summer but we have solved that and he will be available to us for the start of the season. We are getting a step closer to concluding this but we are not quite there yet."
