Crewe may be forced to bring in a striker on loan as cover for the injured Luke Varney.
Varney, who is Alex's top scorer with 25 goals this season, broke a bone in his foot during last week's draw with Brighton and will be out of action for up to six weeks.
"It's a real blow for the club and it's a real setback for him," assistant manager Neil Baker told the club's website.
"Luke has played a lot of games and done a lot of training in recent weeks. We have patched him up and he has gone out and played again.
"We have still Mike Higdon and Rodney Jack to turn to, but after those we are down to the likes of Tom Pope, who has no first-team experience, so we may have to explore the loan market.
"We will give our own players a chance first, but we have discussed some names and may follow that through if we need to."
