Crewe's Luke Varney has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a broken toe.

The striker, scorer of 24 goals this season, suffered the injury during Saturday`s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Boss Dario Gradi says he will initially resist the temptation to replace Varney with a loan signing by giving his own players a chance to stake a claim.

"He (Varney) is going to be out for at least a month but we hope to have him back for the last few games of the season. That is what happens in this game and you just have to get on with it," said Gradi.

"Luke's setback gives someone else a chance and we will see how our own strikers get on before looking at the possibility of getting someone else in loan if needs be."
