Crewe manager Dario Gradi has warned Jon Otsemobor that he will have to raise his game if he wants to secure a move away from Gresty Road.
The full-back was placed on the transfer list last month after turning down the offer of a contract extension.
Otsemobor has been linked with a move to the Premiership and Gradi accepts that his performance in the Carling Cup defeat to Manchester United in October demanded that sort of recognition.
However, Gradi believes he has to produce that sort of form consistently, and slammed his latest display in the 1-0 reverse at Oldham.
"He can be whatever he wants to be, it's just whether he can do it," Gradi explained.
"If he plays like he did against Manchester United then maybe he will attract big clubs if they're going to do something on the basis of that.
"But if he performs like he did in the first half against Oldham, then he'll struggle to get a league team."
