Crewe Alexandra are interested in signing Grimsby Town left back Tom Newey, according to assistant manager Neil Baker.
With defender Billy Jones having declared his desire to leave Gresty Road, young prospect Newey could well provide the perfect cover.
The 23-year-old signed a new three-year deal at Blundell Park this summer though, and Bury's Tom Kennedy has therefore been touted as another possible target.
But with the January transfer window still some way off, Alex number two Baker admits there is still a lot of work left to do.
"We're not close to signing a new left back, which is why we were looking at loans last week," he explained.
"We're looking at plenty and the two names mentioned, we've looked at them."
For now though, the mid-table League One side's immediate focus must turn to the Carling Cup, and the eagerly awaited visit of Premiership leaders Manchester United on Wednesday.
