Crewe Alexandra are hoping to tie up a deal for former Manchester United striker Eddie Johnson when the player returns from holiday.
The young forward has been offered a two-year deal by the relegated side and has taken his time over resolving his future after being released from Old Trafford.
However, Crewe boss Dario Gradi has now revealed that the waiting could be nearly over after speaking to Johnson's agent.
"I have made contact with Eddie although indirectly through his agent and I have received an indication that he is willing to sign once he returns from his holiday," Gradi told the club's official website.
"Eddie had said that things would be sorted out quickly, but that hasn't been the case.
"If he comes back from his holiday and says yes he wants to sign then that is what we want. I won't accept anything less."
Meanwhile, Crewe have continued to secure the future of their young prospects by handing professional deals to Adam Dugdale and John Dillon.
The pair have joined Cavell Coo and Christopher Flynn in signing one-year deals at Gresty Road.
