CREWE defender Richard Walker says he had no hesitation in signing a new three-year deal at Gresty Road.

The 22-year-old, who has earned the nickname 'The Doorman' from Alex fans, signed for Crewe boss Dario Gradi (pictured) as a trainee in August 1999.

He made his breakthrough into the first team last season and formed an excellent partnership with Stephen Foster at the heart of the defence.

Crewe will be facing the likes of Sunderland and West Ham United next term after promotion back into Division One, and Walker is looking forward to the challenge.

He told the club's official website: "It's great to have the security of another three years for me and my family.

"I'm really looking forward to the new season and pitting my wits against the strikers in the First Division.

"It is nice to know that the club have faith in me, in offering me a three-year contract."

Walker and Foster are expected to form a partnership at the back that could last for years and the two players are very familiar with each other's games.

"I enjoy playing alongside Stephen Foster," added Walker. "We have played alongside each other since the youth team and hopefully we will develop our partnership over the next three years in the First Division."
