CREWE ALEXANDRA have swooped to sign striking sensation Luke Varney from Midlands Alliance side Quorn.

The 20-year-old caught the eye of Crewe scouts when racking up 25 goals for Quorn.

Birmingham had also expressed interest in the youngster, but Dario Gradi`s side stepped in to offer him a deal.

Varney agreed terms and penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Division Two side and is seen as a talent for the future.

First-team coach Neil Baker unearthed Varney and he said: "We've watched him a few times and he took my eye straight away and that doesn't happen often when you're scouting.

"I am sure a lot of clubs have watched this lad, but we've decided to do something about it.

"He's got pace and is very quick, he's got a nice touch.

"He's a young player, whose ambition I'm sure is to play in the Football League."
