Claridge confident over duo

Millwall are confident Barry Hayles and Matt Lawrence are staying at The New Den.

Millwall boss Steve Claridge is confident striker Barry Hayles and defender Matt Lawrence will be staying at The New Den.

The Lions have seen a number of players leave the club since the end of last season.

With Jeff Burnige surprisingly stepping down as Millwall chairman after less than two months in the post last week, there were fears that more players were heading for the exit door.

Lawrence was linked with moves to Hull City and Sheffield United while Hayles was reportedly set to end his year-long spell at the South London club.

Claridge, however, has moved quickly to allay any fears that Hayles and Lawrence would be on the move.

"Hopefully, they will be staying," Claridge told the club's official website.

"Matty is very close to signing a new deal, which is a big boost for everybody.

"Barry has never been an issue. Sometimes I read the papers and wonder if the people writing the articles have got better information than I have - and then I realise I'm the manager of the football club, so they can't!

"Hopefully, no more players will leave before the start of the season."
