Dickov hails Doncaster spirit

Doncaster boss Paul Dickov was proud of his players after they chalked up their third successive win in beating Crewe 2-1 at home.

Crewe led through an early George Ray goal but Rovers hit back to equalise in the 62nd minute through Dean Furman before Richie Wellens hit a spectacular last-gasp winner. Dickov said " We left it late but I thought it was thoroughly deserved because it would have been a crying shame if we hadn't won the game. "We put a tremendous amount of effort into our performance and showed a lot of patience before scoring the winning goal. "I thought they caused us problems in the first half but it was one-sided after the interval after we had changed our formation and made one or two alterations. "What pleased me most was we stuck to our football and kept passing the ball round and that was epitomised when we scored the winner which was a quality goal from a quality player. "We conceded an horrendous goal from a set-piece to go behind but all credit to the players because they showed massive character to battle back. "I'm proud of the way they stuck at it we're in the top six now but the hardest part is to stay there and that's a challenge for us all". Crewe went ahead in the eighth minute when centre-back Ray fired home at the far post following a corner after home keeper Stephen Bywater had done well to parry a near-post header from Alan Tate. Bywater made a couple of point-blank saves from Nicky Ajose and Marcus Haber to keep Rovers in the game as Crewe edged the first half. But Doncaster came storming back after the interval and deservedly equalised when Furman forced a header from Uche Ikpeazu over the line following a 62nd-minute free-kick. It looked as if Crewe might hang on for a point but Rovers snatched a deserved winner when Wellens fired home in spectacular style from 20 yards. Crewe boss Steve Davis said "It was disappointing to concede right at the death but it was probably what we deserved for our second-half performance. "I thought we played really well in the first half but I always felt one goal might not be enough to win the game. "They changed to a diamond formation just before half-time which helped them and we couldn't get our wing-backs far enough up the pitch to cause them problems. "There was a lot of effort in the second half but we didn't show enough composure or quality on the ball. We seemed to run out of legs a bit and one or two players had an off night . "But we've had a great run with three wins on the trot so I can't be too harsh on them. "I'd have been happy with a point but it wasn't to be. Now we have to pick ourselves up, put it behind us and move on to the next match."
