Football League clubs shock Championship sides in Carling Cup

Shrewsbury, Morecombe and Bury stunned Championship opposition as they knocked them out of the first round of the Carling Cup. Morecambe provided one of the night's major shocks as they beat Barnsley 2-0 with goals from Danny Carlton and Kevin Ellison. League Two Shrewsbury produced a thrilling 3-2 win over Nigel Clough's Derby team as they cruised into the second round of the competition. Marvin Morgan bagged a first-half brace for the Shrews to set them on their way to victory. Bury defeated Coventry 3-1 as they poured further misery on the Championship club who were beaten in their opening game of the new season. Ryan Lowe did the damage with a brace. Doncaster encountered no such problems as they showed their Championship class to swat aside Tranmere 3-0 to move into the next round.

Rodriguez

Burnley were taken to extra time by plucky Burton Albion but four goals by Jay Rodriguez saw them eventually claim a 6-3 victory. Brighton managed to claim a narrow 1-0 win over Gillingham as they continued their progress. Bournemouth produced the most convincing performance of the night as they thumped Dagenham & Redbridge 5-0, with Lyle Taylor helping himself to hat-trick. Elsewhere, Scunthorpe beat Lancashire outfit Accrington 2-0 to put their names in the hat for the next round. MK Dons cruised into the second round with a comfortable 4-1 win over Cheltenham.
