Skysports.com understands Sven Goran-Eriksson is set to name midfielder Richie Wellens as Leicester captain this season.

Four players have worn the armband in the Foxes' pre-season, with Wellens following on from former captain Andy King, Matt Oakley and Matt Mills when he skippered the side in their friendly against Valencia last month.

Manager Eriksson has chosen to reward the 31-year-old with the armband on a permanent basis after two impressive seasons at the Championship club.

The midfielder has established himself as a key member of the Foxes set-up since joining from Doncaster in 2009.

Wellens featured in all but three of Leicester's Championship matches in his debut season, helping them to the play-offs, where they ultimately missed out to Cardiff.

He was no less influential in his second term at the King Power Stadium, playing a crucial role in midfield under the reign of both Paulo Sousa and Eriksson when he took over last October.

Wellens' performances earned him Leicester's player of the year award in May.
