Wales international David Cotterill feels it was the right decision for John Toshack to leave as team manager now rather than wait two more games.
Toshack ended days of speculation over his future on Thursday by announcing his resignation as national boss with immediate effect.
The Football Association of Wales labelled his departure as a mutual agreement, but the 61-year-old admitted he had wanted to remain in the post for next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
However, 22-year-old Cotterill believes the team would be in the exact same situation as they are now if Toshack had remained and the qualifying games had ended badly.
"Results have shown we haven't been fulfilling our potential because we have got a very good squad coming along. We should be doing a lot better," said Cotterill.
"The next two or three games are vital for us.
"I think John wanted to carry on for two more games but I don't see any sense in that.
"If we had lost those games we'd have been in the same position as we are now.
"I think it probably was the best time to part with John and get a new man in."
Pressure
The pressure on Toshack reached its peak following Wales' opening Euro 2012 qualifying defeat in Montenegro on Friday.
Swansea winger Cotterill, who was on the bench for that match, admits he suspected a change in management could be forthcoming on the flight home.
"On the way home on the plane John was at the front speaking to the executives more than he usually would after a game," said Cotterill.
"There was a little rumour that maybe he was going to resign or part company."
