Adams hails Tranmere spirit

Micky Adams felt Tranmere were "deserved winners" in their 2-1 victory at Cambridge, while Richard Money refused to talk to the press.

Rovers ended a run of five consecutive defeats courtesy of goals by Max Power and Danny Gardner, either side of Sullay Kaikai's equaliser for the U's. They also survived the last 11 minutes with 10 men following captain Steve Jennings' dismissal for a second yellow card. Rovers climb out of the relegation zone on goal difference while their hosts are 18th, now only six points above danger. "We started nervously but gradually came into the game," said Adams. "We showed real spirit and commitment, and that's what we're going to need. They're a big old unit, a big side and if you get drawn into the way they want to play, with their physical strength there's only going to be one winner and that was them. "We needed to see if we could utilise our spare midfield man as best we could and get bodies up to Kay (Kayode Odejayi). It's worked and I'm delighted with them. I'm really chuffed with the way we defended at times, we really put our bodies on the line. "Small margins can determine a game at this level. I think we saw that on Saturday: if we get a penalty against Northampton as we should have done then that gives us a big boost. "If you're at the bottom of the table and you get that first goal it's something to hang on to and gives you more belief in what you're doing and we've seen that tonight. There was great spirit, particularly when they equalised." Cambridge's chief executive Jez George took on media duties in place of head coach Money and reflected on "a bad night." "Conceding a bad goal at a bad time has been a recurring thing and the game probably panned out similarly to a couple of others at home," he said. "We started quite brightly, we didn't get the early goal, we gave the opposition some encouragement, we conceded a bad goal. The disappointing thing, even more so than that, is we got back into it and then we've not been able to go on from there, whether to get a point or to go on and win it. "The facts are we haven't played very well for a little while. Every time we make one half stride forward we then shoot ourselves in the foot a little bit and take two strides back. "Richard's really disappointed. I know he's got a responsibility to speak I guess but sometimes I think it's better for him to reflect on everything and to let me come and answer questions."
