Fletcher brace pleases Wilcox

Image: Russ Wilcox: Great performance from everyone

Russ Wilcox praised striker Wes Fletcher after he fired York to a 2-0 win over Tranmere to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Fletcher struck in each half as York dominated Rovers at Bootham Crescent. Wilcox had brought Fletcher in to face a Tranmere team which had started the game in 20th but we're lucky not to ship more goals against a rampant York. "I thought Wes Fletcher was the catalyst for our performance," said Wilcox. "Any striker needs confidence and I think getting an early goal is great for a striker." Wilcox also hailed the rest of his team, who were dominant after a quiet opening 15 minutes in their first win of the calendar year. "It wasn't just about Wes, it was a great performance from everyone," added Wilcox. "With Russ Penn and Brad (Halliday) in there protecting, it gives the front four license to get forward. "It was all about getting three points and we have done that with style. One shot on target for Tranmere and I think it was in the 93rd or 94th minute. Every man has put in a terrific shift." Fletcher won the free-kick for his opening goal after 19 minutes which he steered home at the far post from Bradley Halliday's low ball across the box. Fletcher struck again 57 minutes in when he shot low into the bottom corner. Michael Coulson and Josh Carson also went close as York looked to add to the score and Tranmere had keeper Owain Fon Williams to thank for the defeat not being more emphatic. Wilcox was also pleased for the fans who showed up in strength to back his team despite their lowly position in the table for what was only their second home win of the season. "Everybody at the club deserves that as it has been doom and gloom," he noted. "Today was a bit special. The fans played a huge part, got behind the lads because it has been nervy at home. "It was great to see out the game like we did. We were very professional with our game management." Tranmere manager Micky Adams did not hold back in his criticism of his players. "I have told the players that they all have to have a look in the mirror," said Adams. "If we play like that we will get relegated." The Tranmere manager was surprised his team had played so badly against another side threatened by relegation. "I thought York were there for the taking but we have not asked enough questions of their goalkeeper," said Adams. "What has made that more disappointing was the fact we have gone 4-4-2 and we're looking to stretch them." Only Fon Williams drew any praise from Adams, who added: "The only bright spot was the form of our goalkeeper but he and the rest of the team have to ask themselves why it was he was so busy. "I am not immune from criticism myself. I have got broad shoulders and will take any flak that comes my way. "But the players have to take responsibility when they perform like that because it was simply not good enough."
