Tranmere Rovers have appointed Micky Adams as their new manager.

Adams takes over from Rob Edwards, who was sacked on Tuesday after just five months in charge, with the club bottom of League Two after picking up just nine points from 12 games this season.

The 52-year-old will watch his new team at Oxford on Saturday, with assistant manager Matt Gill and coach Alex Russell taking control of the team before he steps into the home dugout for the first time against Mansfield on Tuesday.

Adams began his managerial career at Fulham in 1996, lifting the club from 91st in the Football League to win promotion the following season before enjoying successful spells with Brighton and Leicester. Apart from a brief spell at Sheffield United in 2010, he has spent the last five years at Port Vale.

Rovers chairman Mark Palios told the club website: "In the position the club currently finds itself we felt it was important to appoint an experienced manager with good connections and a track record of success in League Two.

“In our present position at the bottom of the League, we don’t have the luxury of the time to allow a new manager to learn his trade.

There’s a lot of hard work ahead but it’s a challenge I’m relishing.

“Micky has an impressive win ratio, which he has sustained over a long career and often in circumstances where he has had to operate in difficult situations or with limited budgets. His success is no flash in the pan.

“We have acted quickly to fill the post so he has as much time as possible to lift us up the table and to identify his targets to strengthen the squad in the transfer window."

Adams said: "I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to manage Tranmere Rovers.

"The immediate task is to get the club off the foot of the table. There’s a lot of hard work ahead but it’s a challenge I’m relishing.

"Tranmere is a good club with a proud history and one which shouldn’t be near the bottom of the division. In the weeks and months ahead I’ll be doing everything I can to drive the club forward and to a much healthier position."
