Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore hailed summer signing Chris Atkinson following their 2-0 win over Mansfield in the Capital One Cup.

Rovers skipper Andy Robinson nodded his side in front before Atkinson, who arrived from Huddersfield in pre-season, made no mistake when he raced onto a through-ball to lash home.

The Stags improved after the break and Louis Briscoe and Lindon Meikle both had chances to pull one back, but Tranmere eased to victory, leaving Moore purring over his summer acquisition.

"I thought we were good in the first half and we were patient and built from there," he said.

"We got the two goals. I just thought in the second half we sat too deep and allowed them to come back into the game a little bit.

"We got sloppy with our passing and it wasn't as crisp as it was in the first half. But the job was done in the first half really.

"Chris Atkinson came in and I thought he showed what a player he can be. He sprayed it and passed it and will get goals, so I was pleased for him. It was a great finish at a good time for us.

"But I'm disappointed that we've allowed them into the game a little bit when we should be setting the tempo and it was disappointing we didn't go onto score more."
