City midfielder rejects permanent move to Vale

Millwall are poised to beat Port Vale to the permanent signing of Marc Laird from Manchester City. The midfielder has recently been on loan at Vale, and scored once in 10 appearances for the League One strugglers. But he has shunned a permanent deal at Vale Park in favour of a move to fellow League One side Millwall. A statement on Millwall's official website read: "Millwall hope to complete the signing of Manchester City midfielder Marc Laird on a two-and-a-half year contract within the next 24 hours."

Battle

Vale manager Lee Sinnott expressed his disappointment at losing out to Millwall for the Scotsman's signature. "It has been a battle between us and Millwall and I have pushed as hard as I can for Marc's signature, but it looks like he has decided to join them," Sinnott told Vale's official website. "I have had a phone call from his agent, who told me that it was 99.9% certain that Marc would be joining Millwall instead of Port Vale. "I have done everything I can to persuade him his future is with us, but at the end of the day there is very little we can do if he has already made up his mind." Laird, who spent a spell on loan at Northampton Town last season, will leave City without making a first-team appearance for the club.
