Tranmere goalkeeper John Achterberg could be ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Achterberg has been struggling with a long-running groin injury and a recent visit to a specialist in Holland has done little to allay initial fears.
The Dutch custodian has suffered an infection in the injured region that is now likely to delay any attempt to return to Rovers' first team.
Tranmere boss Brian Little has spoken of Achterberg's current situation and concedes that the initial diagnosis is not looking bright.
''John is not in good nick,'' Little told the Daily Post.
''He may have a bit of an infection in one of the wounds from the operation and it is giving him a problem.
''He is still very sore. There is something not quite right at the moment.
''He had some blood tests today to see if there is an infection there.''
