Zola handed Rovers deal

Tranmere Rovers have handed a new contract to striker Calvin Zola Makongo.

Tranmere Rovers have handed a new contract to striker Calvin Zola Makongo.

The 20-year-old missed most of last season due to problems over his work permit status, but he has now been handed an extended deal.

Rovers have had the Congolese youngster's permit extended by two years, enabling them to sign him up until 2007.

"We're all looking forward to Calvin progressing. He's put a lot of his troubles behind him and we're just hoping he will become a major player for us," Rovers boss Brian Little told the club's official website.

"He has worked really hard in training during the last few months and even though he has not been playing games he has improved."

Rovers have also been boosted by the news that Jamaican duo Ian Goodison and Theodore Whitmore have also had their work permits approved for the new season.

They have both now agreed one-year deals at Prenton Park.

"Ian took part in over 50 games for us last season. He keeps good shape and discipline and is very popular around the club," added Little.

"Theodore was involved in less but was very important to us and he has an ability to turn things in a second.

"We had a really good hearing and we're delighted that all three cases were approved."
