Sky Sports understands Halifax boss Neil Aspin is in the frame for the vacant manager's job at Carlisle.

Carlisle are searching for a new boss following the sacking of Graham Kavanagh earlier this week after less than a year in charge at Brunton Park.

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy, but Aspin is thought to figure highly on the wanted list of the Sky Bet League 2 club's hierarchy.

Aspin is earning himself a reputation as one of the best managers outside the Football League after guiding Halifax to three promotions since taking charge in 2009.

The 49-year-old helped Halifax to fifth in their first season back in the Conference Premier last season with the smallest budget in the division on a part-time model.

Aspin has helped lead Halifax to joint-top of the Conference this term with the Shaymen winning five of their opening six games.

The former Port Vale and Darlington defender has shown he has a good eye for players, having scouted and sold the likes of Jamie Vardy and Lee Gregory to Championship clubs during his time in charge at the Shay.
