Carlisle boss Greg Abbott wants Mike Edwards to show anger and determination in pre-season as he looks to prove himself.
The 33-year-old defender has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury back in January and the former Notts County man was unable to regain his place in the starting line-up.
His manager says he is not giving up on the centre-back and says a change in circumstances will hopefully help him settle.
"I hope Mike comes back with an anger and determination to prove himself," he told the News & Star.
"He has had issues with settling in as he has been away from his family, but he is going to get accommodation up here and have his family up on a more regular basis.
"That is always difficult but I hope he thinks he has got a point to prove and can push the other two very, very hard for a starting place."
