Carlisle assistant manager Graham Kavanagh was at a loss to explain the 2-0 home defeat to Crawley on Saturday.
Crawley's on-loan tottenham youngster Nathan Byrne scored a brilliant individual goal after the break before Nicky Adams grabbed a rather fortunate second, but Carlisle squandered a series of goalscoring chances.
Kavanagh said: "I don't know how we lost this game. It's difficult to put your finger on it.
"We had as many chances as we have had all season. We put the ball in the box countless times and could not make it count."
Kavanagh summed it up when he said: "If you don't put the ball in the net you don't win. It's frustrating because we started well and matched them all over the pitch.
"With the quality we showed there seemed to be only one team that could win it."
