Thirlwell looking upwards

Skipper Paul Thirlwell is confident Carlisle will be better placed to mount a stronger league challenge next season.

The 32-year-old, who agreed a new one-year deal last weekend, believes fewer changes at Brunton Park this summer can only benefit Greg Abbott's squad. Thirlwell said: "The gaffer has moved quickly to get the players he wants to keep signed up and that will be a really big help for next season. "In the last few seasons the club always seems to have lost one or two players who have turned down new contracts, which has meant having to make more changes. "This time there's going to be a settled squad to work with and there probably won't be the need for wholesale changes. That can have a big effect as it helps to build up a real bond throughout the club that you don't get when there's constant upheaval."
