Boss quiet over Novo link to Ibrox

Manager Walter Smith has ruled out a Rangers return for Kris Boyd and would not be drawn over a link with Nacho Novo. Boyd left for English Championship side Middlesbrough after his Gers contract expired last summer, while Novo returned to Spain with Sporting Gijon, with both signing two-year deals with their new clubs. Smith is on the look-out for a new striker following Kenny Miller's departure for Bursaspor, and both Boyd and Novo are not enjoying the best of times since leaving Ibrox. But the veteran boss insists the Scottish champions have been priced out of any potential move for Boyd. "It's a simple one, that one," he said.

"We couldn't afford to pay the money that Middlesbrough were paying last season and we are still in that position where we can't afford to pay it now. "It's just a situation where Kris left us to go to a club who could pay him more money. "We couldn't pay him that money and we still can't, and that's the situation." As for Novo, Smith refused to shed any further light on his proposed transfer dealings before the window shuts. "Whatever we are going to do in the transfer market between now and it finishing, we will do," he added. "There has been enough speculation at the moment."
