Crewe are facing a battle to land Gretna's highly-rated goalkeeper Greg Fleming.

Alex hope to land Gretna keeper, trialist fails to impress

Crewe Alexandra are facing a battle to sign Gretna's highly-rated goalkeeper Greg Fleming. Dundee United are also interested in the Scotland under-21 international and Gretna have allowed him to link up with the side. But Crewe boss Steve Holland is hoping to tempt Fleming into the English league as a potential replacement for Ben Williams who may leave the Alex in the summer. Fleming can choose to leave Gretna after their financial difficulties meant his contract was breached by non-payment of wages.

Keeper interest

Gretna director of football Mick Wadsworth confirmed the two clubs were interested in the goalkeeper. "Crewe have shown an interest in Greg and Dundee United also want a closer look at him, so he may well go up there for a couple of days," he told The Sentinel. "It is no surprise clubs are looking at him. There has been a dual purpose here in recent weeks to finish the remaining games, but also to see if opportunity knocks for players to further their careers."
New deals
Holland is hoping to secure a couple of deals before the season is out despite Crewe still needing a point to guarantee their League One survival. Aston Villa academy player Steven Clancy had been on trial with the Alex but he failed to impress during his trial. Meanwhile midfielder Michael O'Connor and defender George Abbey both penned new contracts with the club.
