Carlisle all but wrapped up the League Two title with a 2-0 win at mid-table Rochdale.
Strikes from Danny Livesey and Peter Murphy leave Paul Simpson's side needing an unprecedented collapse on the final day of the season to prevent them being champions.
The Cumbrians are now three points ahead of Northampton, with a goal difference advantage of 16, and their breakthrough came on 36 minutes when Livesey headed in a corner from Murphy.
Just a minute before the break their advantage was doubled when Murphy (pictured) again got in on the action by rocketing home a fierce effort from an Adam Murray cross.
After already clinching their second consecutive promotion Carlisle are now effectively League Two champions, with only a catastrophic set of mathematical machinations able to deny them the title.
