Garry Monk has told Sky Sports he would relish an extended stay at Swansea and is "dreaming big" after guiding the club to a record-high finish in the Premier League.

The 36-year-old has two years left on his current deal at the Liberty Stadium but is already in preliminary talks over a new contract after surpassing the club's record top-flight points tally and securing eighth spot - one better than last year - in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Patrick Davison prior to Swansea's Super Sunday clash with Manchester City, Monk said: “I am sure in the coming weeks the discussions will be good and if there is a new contract to be signed, then great.

“Every season we seem to improve, we seem to progress, the squad gets better and the football we take on to another level. You have to manage expectations to be realistic but you can never stop dreaming.

“That’s not just the fans, it’s the players and myself. You have to dream big, but expectations you have to manage as well.”

Swansea have morphed from League Two strugglers to stable Premier League outfit in little over a decade, chairman Huw Jenkins the man behind their incredible turn in fortunes.

Jenkins presided over Monk's rise from player to dugout and is full of praise for the man he appointed 13 months ago.

“Timing is important,” Jenkins told Sky Sports.

“It’s not looking at what somebody has done in the past, it’s what they can do now and the future.

“The team needed bringing together and needed stability at the time. Garry has done a fantastic job. As I have said recently, I know he has grown into the job,” he added.

“We are talking (about a new contract), everybody that is successful at any club are probably entitled to be rewarded and we will sit down and talk things through.

“The aim this summer is to try and recruit one or two players who can strengthen the squad and you hope the players, manager and staff that have done so well this year can perform to that level again next year. You just have to keep your fingers crossed that’s the case.”
