In-form Swansea winger Wayne Routledge has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him with the Premier League side until at least the summer of 2018.

The 29-year-old former England U21 international has been a major success since arriving at Swansea in 2011 and has made over 100 appearances for the Welsh club.

He began his career at Crystal Palace and went on to play for Tottenham, Aston Villa, QPR and Newcastle, as well as having loan spells at Portsmouth, Fulham and Cardiff.

But he is now settled at Swansea and manager Garry Monk thinks he has earned the contract extension.

“He deserves it because, in my time here, he's probably been our most consistent performer – and he's still performing,” said Monk.

"He's found a home, somewhere he can be himself and bring out the player we now see week-in week-out.

"He's an experienced professional and what he brings to the squad is very valuable.

"He's been around at a lot of top clubs and seen a lot of things, but he has to trust you first before he opens up.

"He'll admit himself he rebelled a little bit at times as a youngster, but I think he never felt he could express himself.

"Perhaps he was unsure of what he was capable of, but here he's had that freedom and guidance to be better.

"He does extras in training, he wants to improve all the time, and it's great to have him here."

Routledge said: "It was a simple decision for me. Once I found out about the option to extend it was a no-brainer.

"I'm happy to have that extra year at the club. This club is on the up and we are going places.

"We have two new brilliant training facilities, a lovely stadium and a manager and staff who are prepared to put in a lot of hard work and effort to get us where we all want to be. It's the whole package, and it's a good fit.

"I came here when the club just got into the Premier League and it's been a great journey so far.

"We've grown and grown, and I still think we are growing. I've learned a lot about myself as a person and as a footballer.

"I think I've progressed with the more games I play."
