Wales' match-winner Gareth Bale emphasised the importance of points rather than performance after their 2-1 European qualifying win against Andorra.

Andorra took a shock lead in the sixth minute of Tuesday night's Group B clash when Swansea full-back Neil Taylor was adjudged to have pulled the jersey of Ivan Lorenzo in the penalty box, before skipper Ildefons Lima sent Wayne Hennessey the wrong way as the home side scored their first competitive goal for 18 matches.

Watch Bale's free-kick winner

Wales equalised with Bale's header after 22 minutes in Andorra la Vella before the Real Madrid star won the game with a stunning free-kick nine minutes from time.

"To get us off to a good start is massively important for us," Bale told Sky Sports.

"We ourselves have expectations. We want to qualify and if we are to, we have to come to places like this and get victories.

"(For the free-kick) I tried to hit the sweet spot and luckily enough I did - the important thing for us was to get it out of the way and get three points."

Williams relieved with result

Wales captain Ashley Williams said his side showed courage to keep pressure on Andorra, forcing the late winner on a tricky pitch.

More from Andorra V Wales

"We knew it was going to be difficult going into it, but I don't think any of us imagined how difficult the pitch would play," said the Swansea defender,

"It shows the courage and how much we really wanted it, and our togetherness. All that came through today, and that's what we've been talking about since we came together.

"I couldn't think of a tougher start to our campaign than Andorra away on that pitch, especially going a goal down."
