Ashley Williams has admitted that Wales are lucky to have Gareth Bale but he is not sure whether the world's most expensive player will be fit to start against Macedonia.

All eyes will be on Bale following his record-breaking switch from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid but he has yet to play this season and may not be selected for Friday's World Cup qualifier.

Defender Williams has been impressed by what he has seen from Bale in training and is just glad to have him in contention.

"We haven't spoken about our starting XI yet so I don't know what the gaffer's going to do, but I don't think he's match fit," Williams told Sky Sports News.

"He seems good in training. He has taken part in all the sessions and from what I can see he looks, good, but I'm guessing he needs a bit more match fitness.

"He has looked the same old Gareth and we are happy to have him."

Bale will provide Wales' main threat if he is considered fit to start but Williams acknowledges that he can no longer be regarded as a secret weapon.

"He's the most expensive player and we're lucky that we've got him and he plays for us, but if they didn't know about him before they definitely do now," said the Swansea City centre-back.
